    I take a collagen supplement every day. I am on targeted therapy for stage four cancer and my hair was thinning with it. The supplements I use are from British Supplements and I swear by them. I too experienced the same issues when I stopped taking it but my oncologist said it was safe to take alongside my cancer treatment. My daughter cut my hair yesterday and she said my hair looked thicker 💪🏼🥰

    Jemma, this is all good information. I had a breast cancer diagnosis in 2020, went through chemo, surgery, and radiation. No cancer now. BUT...I have to take aromatase inhibitors to suppress my estrogen forever now. And that has thinned my hair SOOO much. I can see my scalp from all angles. So I will try collagen supplements to see if it helps. If is does that will be great. If it doesn't, it's still okay.

    Stopping collagen made your body revert back to what it would have been like without it. So collagen improved things and didn't cause the actual 'side effects'. No downside, just highlighted the lack of a certain nutrient in your body.

  • @sallyjones9702
    @sallyjones9702 4 години тому

    I took liquid collagen for two years and saw zero difference. I stopped it because it was expensive and I didn’t seem to be benefitting from it and didn’t register any difference for stopping it either. However, is it not normal that your body would revert to type when you stop taking the supplement? If you stop taking your blood pressure meds, your BP goes back to what it was prior to treatment? I hope you get back to where you were before. I understand how it makes you feel so much better about yourself if your hair is as you want it.

    • @PamperedWolf

      Of course that’s no surprise, but the speed that it reversed for me was the shock. It was so fast. X

  • @athenamay30

    It figures that everything would revert to normal once you stop. I take a collagen (type 1,2,3) powder from Germany (1 kg costs only 26 euros) and though the results are not phenomenal or maybe I'm just not tracking the changes, it sure has helped with joint pain, hair retention (along with castor oil), stronger nails, etc ... thanks for sharing! Like you, I stopped once and returned to collagen after experiencing the downsides.

    What there is evidence for is a wholefood plant based diet, organic where possible. All the colours of the rainbow. Gemmas thin hair is probably genetic, hormones also play a part. We are animals and shed, just like dogs do, more at certain times of year, and it's more noticable the longer the hair. I take good care of my skin but and have always taken care of my health, eating as little crap as possible. I'm now 70, on only one medication for a genetic issue. Not exagerating, but i look 50, (with make-up ). I know this message probably won't be welcome, but good skin care alongside a balanced highly nutritious diet and regular walking will pay off.

    I have already committed to lifelong purchasing of collagen. Not sure if it's standard in the UK to get bone density scans & to go on meds to stop bone loss, but it is standard in the US. I've been on meds for 6-7 years & time to get off. (Meds begin to do reverse & destroy density.) My recent scan after 6 months on bovine collagen was remarkable!! I went from osteoporosis in 1 hip/osteopenia in the other. Now, all I show is low levels of osteopenia! So my bones are addicted to collagen, and I must heed the need.

      @@PamperedWolf we are supposed to take it 3 times a year with periodic spacing. If your collagen is of high strength, its best to take it for a week only. Point is it is not a good idea to take it daily as most people do. The body becomes dependent on the collagen & loses its ability to make its own collagen.

    Withdrawal is a thing. A lot of benefits, go away when you stop a supplement or medication. The same thing happens with skincare. Stop tretinoin for a month and see how irritating it is when you start again. You lose tolerance of the product, possible a return of fine lines, loss of collagen. Sorry you learned this the hard way😪 Many blessings!💖💖💖

    Oh a suggestion, I had a full blood workup, everything, not just the routine bloodwork, because of my age. My doctor discovered I was deficient in a few things, B12 being one of them. We added some vitamins to my daily routine. When I tell you I could not get my hair to grow before the workup, it was as if my hair was just getting shorter and shorter on it’s own. Above my shoulder. After a year with the changed routine my hair is past my waist! I need to get about 3” cut off…. Maybe it was a fluke, but I think checking in on your body and getting a full workup every few years is a good idea.

    No disrespect intended, but while I can understand how shocked you must have been, I'm surprised you didn't realise this. None of the supplements we all take to combat the menopausal effects of reduced oestrogen production are temporary. HRT is no different! The use of these supplements is permanent because, of course, we will never be able to increase our oestrogen production naturally again. So if and when you stop taking them, you will immediately revert to your original stage of ageing and the oestrogen deficiency will be acute.

  • @zenabraithwaite1934
    @zenabraithwaite1934 14 годин тому

    As a post menopausal woman I take A LOT of supplements. I have elected not to take HRT. However since menopause I have had recurring hair loss, plantar fasciitis, frozen shoulder, varicose veins, brain fog. I actually started taking the marine collagen after seeing the results your Mum got, but the real improvement I got was also taking Ashwaganda and Rhodalia. I went to my GP for a full blood test as I had one patch of hair behind my left ear that would not grow. The results showed my adrenal function was not within range. Adrenal function can be affected after menopause as the adrenal glands take over from the oval after menopause. However there is also a link between the COVID vaccine and adrenal function which actually correlates to the timing of the most recent hair growth issue. ...... So since taking the Ashwaganda and Collagen and ensuring I eat enough protein each day ( most people don't especially if they are vegetarian or pescatarian) my hair behind my ear has caught up and my hair had started to fill in a bit ( like you I've always had fine hair). My shedding has significantly decreased. I also take mushroom complex for brain fog ( a life saver) . We need to remember that food due to methods of growth and production is a lot less nutritious than it used to be. Yes investment in supplements is expensive but I see it for me personally as essential. I take red vine leaf for varicose vein pain and I literally cannot cope without them , no treatment now available on the NHS and it's 10k to have them treated privately.

    I also noticed joint pain after stopping collagen. I had been adding collagen powder to my coffee for some time, but I stopped drinking coffee. I started drinking tea lattes instead, but I didn't add the collagen for the first several days thinking it would taste bad. My knees started hurting a LOT after exercise. I tried adding the collagen to my tea lattes (I wouldn't add it to just tea alone, but mixed with milk it tastes just fine) and sure enough, those aches went away pretty quickly. I do have to say I've never noticed major improvements in skin, nails, hair though. 🤷‍♀️

    I took collagen for three months and my knees have never hurt so bad in my life! It got to the point I could hardly exercise anymore and to get off of the floor was brutal. I started thinking about what was new in my life, and that was the only thing new I took. I stopped taking it and instantly my knees stopped hurting.

      Could have been the brand. I had a major allergy to Sainsburys multi vitamins - caused a growth on my tongue that I thought was cancer, was even due to have a hospital biopsy.

      I tried taking collagen powder supplement that was considered good quality, grass fed etc. I only started for 2 weeks, suddenly got bad joint pain in my hips & some in my knees. I stopped taking it only because I was staying at my cousins & it was hers so I stopped when I left. Strange thing is my hip & knee joint pain went away. Honestly I just think everyone’s body responds differently. What works for one, doesn’t always work for someone else. Listen to your body. I feel terrible Gemma had the hair loss experience. I’m hoping I do fine, being I only took it for 2 weeks & suddenly stopped. I wouldn’t think that would be enough time to experience any hair loss related to it. 🙏 Grateful for this informative video.

    What about Arginine, Lysine & Proline ? Buying all 3 or as combination to produce own collagen?

    Thanks for sharing this Gemma, my baby hairs have all started coming out just when I run my hands through my hair. I also stopped taking collagen a couple of months ago. I hadn’t put 2&2 together but maybe it equals four. Need to think about my next steps!!

    Since I eat meat every day all the negative symptomes you enumerated are much better. There is a lot of natural collagen in meat! 😜
